Effect of Alpha-Adrenergic blocker in Thermoresistant Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Abstract
After thermotherapy in 100 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BP)H), the overall improvement rate-defined as more than 50% subjective or objective improvement-was 64%, but both subjective and objective symptom improvement were seen in
only
26%.
We evaluated the effectiveness of an alpha-abrenergic blocker in the 57 patients with thermoresistant BPH(i.e., those who did not have a complete response), beginning at least 1 month after thermotherapy. After at least 1 month of treatment, the
overall
improvement rate was 47%(27/50). Therefore, the combined improvement rate of thermotherapy plus an alpha-acrenergic blocker in the 83 patients available for follow-up was 87%. We conclude that the use of an alpha-adrenergic blocker in patients
with
thermoresistant BPH increases their chance of avoiding operation.
